A multi-kilometer straight highway with good and level markings is the main and prerequisite for the operation of the new set of Nissan Propilot driver's assistants, which are now available on the two most popular models of the brand: Qashqai and X-Trail. On the Karelian roads, we tested lane hold and adaptive cruise, studied the Nissan Connect mobile application and made sure that autopilots in Russia will have a hard time.

How Nissan driver assistants work

Adaptive cruise (automatic braking and acceleration in the lane), as well as the lane tracking system are no longer the prerogatives of only luxury brands. In 2021, Nissan qashqai and Nissan X-Trail have become a little closer to autopilot technologies. The automatic driving assistants are available on the LE + and LE Top trim levels.

A car with such systems can itself move in a straight line on a highway at a speed of 30 to 170 km / h. The option is activated by a button on the steering wheel, after which car symbols appear on the driver's panel indicating the distance and markings. The crossover recognizes the vehicle in front of it, brakes or accelerates depending on the speed of the neighbor in front, and also keeps the course in its lane with barely noticeable steering. Everything happens without sudden movements, prudently in advance - the driver intuitively lifts his foot over the brake, and the car itself slows down. At the same time, the car will not let go of the steering wheel completely: it will first beep, and then it will turn off the assistants and stop in the middle of the road.

However, not everything in the operation of Nissan systems so far is smooth. Driving in the far left lane is a risk that the car will not recognize the curb and the systems will not turn on at all. The highway turns into a bend - the Propilot turns off immediately. The markings have faded, erased or changed color, or even turned into a safety island - the system is deactivated again. A hole, a road hatch or a track - again a shutdown. Snow, rain, mud, bright sun - again by.

At the exit, the adaptive cruise with automatic steering will operate for more than 30 seconds on only a few sections of federal highways. For example, on M11 "Moscow-Peter" or M4 "Don", with smooth asphalt and clear markings. But on any other roads or on city streets, you cannot fully rely on Nissan's assistants. The company's engineers do not hide this, openly declaring that even automatic driving in a traffic jam on city streets is still difficult for the system.

“The technology is designed to make it easier to drive on highways, motorways and motorways. We are talking about multi-lane roads of the highest category, with low steep turns, clear markings, where there are no pedestrians, animals, traffic lights and parked vehicles, ”admits Nissan.
